No Big Deal.
Getting fired or laid off can feel earth-shattering in the moment. Our work is so tied to identity and stability that this disruption can haunt people for years. But what if losing a job didn’t have to be traumatic at all? What if it marked a new beginning instead of closure?
Take a Breathe and Know Your Worth.
The intensified reaction to job loss is a symptom of unhealthy over-reliance on employers for security. Of course steady income matters, but when devastation accompanies termination, it shows a belief that a corporation defines our worth. To and entrepreneur this is a problematic, narrow perspective fueled by risk aversion.

Perspective is Everything.
In reality, the modern economic landscape is ripe with independent opportunities. The gig economy has changed the way an entire generation looks at earning income. They are no longer tied to the concept of career longevity as a primary means of survival. There are some however who have not crossed over that threshold. Take for instance the young woman who recently got laid-off from Cloudflare live on Tik Tok. The video of it happening in real time via video call went absolutely viral. She later described the event as ‘traumatizing” and lamented the impersonal nature of the process.
Let me preface the next bit by saying I have no idea who she is or what her auxiliary skills are but just given her perceived youth, it is highly likely that she would have no issues landing another position somewhere else. With a bit of perseverance and some elbow grease it’s not too difficult even if it means settling for a job in the interim. But the better option for her, I believe, would be to forge her own path using the virality of this video as a jumping off point. She and likewise most others would be far better off if they could just change their mindset about having a “job”. By today's standards a “job” should merely act as a backstop for taking risks or an opportunity to invest in you. By virtue of the fact that she already has a viral video on a Social Media platform she has shaved years of work off the process of starting an online content creator career. There are folks who have been working tirelessly for a decade trying to get that first Viral release.
